Snips and Snaps Articles

These awards are designed to recognize contributions of original scholarly papers (researched and referenced) to Snips and Snaps.

Submissions of original scholarly papers will be awarded as follows:

  • First place paper - $500
  • Five additional papers awarded - $250/each
  • One award for special article (poem, personal reflection) - $250

Authors are encouraged to submit the article(s) to the ORNAC Journal for consideration of publication and eligibility for a national writing award.

Criteria:

  1. The author(s) must have been an active member of ORNAA for a minimum of ONE (1) year.
  2. ONLY original articles are considered.
  3. Conference/seminar/lecture summaries are NOT eligible for consideration of an award.
  4. Articles should contain good sentence structure, proper grammar/punctuation/spelling and good overall composition (introduction/body/conclusion).
  5. References must be listed.
  6. Articles should be submitted by email to the district treasurer who will forward the article to the provincial education director.
  7. Indicate in a cover letter that submission is an original article and include title/date/name/telephone/email address and place of work.

Process:

  1. Judging of articles will be in accordance of the ORNAC Judging Criteria and shall be the responsibility of the ORNAA Education Director with the assistance of designated committee members.
  2. Any of the above stated members would be exempt from judging if they submitted article(s) for consideration.
  3. The ORNAA Education Director will present awards at the ORNAA general meeting.
  4. The ORNAA Executive/Board reserves the right to disclose the names of the recipients and to publish the names in Snips and Snaps.

Promising Star Award

Award description:
This award is to be presented to an Alberta Operating Room Registered Nurse who is currently working in a surgical suite and who has less then two years experience in this role. The nominee exceeds the expectations of their employers and/or colleagues and shows promise as an exceptional member of the Perioperative Registered Nursing profession.
Guidelines:
  • This award is administered by the ORNAA Awards Committee (given only if there is a suitable candidate).
  • One award will be presented per district, per year, if there is a suitable candidate.
  • The Promising Star Award will include a one-year membership to their local ORNAA district and an "ORNAA PROMISING STAR" pin representing the award. One-year membership will be paid by the nominee's local district.
  • Each successful nominee will be highlighted in an issue of Snips and Snaps during the next year. The highlights will be a summary from the nomination form and letters and will include a picture of the nominee (if available).
  • A member of the ORNAA Board will make the award presentation at the annual ORNAA conference.
Eligibility:
  • The nominee must be currently working, as a registered nurse, in a surgical suite and have less then two years experience in this role.
  • The nominee does not have to be an ORNAA member.
  • An ORNAA Promising Star Award nomination form must be completed.
  • As per the nomination form, the nominee must be nominated by a Registered Perioperative Nurse with an active ORNAA membership who writes a supporting letter that demonstrates how the nominee fulfills the criteria of the award.
  • Forward complete nominations to ORNAA Awards chairperson.
  • Contact for questions or to obtain mailing address of ORNAA awards chairperson.
  • Nominations must be received by September 1st.

Muriel Shewchuk Excellence in Leadership Award

Award description:
The "Muriel Shewchuk Excellence in Leadership Award" is to be presented to an Alberta Operating Room Nurse who has demonstrated outstanding and consistent commitment to the specialty and the nursing staff of the operating room(s) through leadership roles in the area of clinical excellence, supervision and /or education as a role model and mentor. The award is presented to honor Muriel Shewchuk who spent over 42 years dedicated to Perioperative Service in Alberta.
Guidelines:
  • This award is administered by the ORNAA Awards Committee (given only if there is a suitable candidate).
  • The Muriel Shewchuk Excellence in Leadership award will include a plaque.
  • Marcia Shewchuk or representative will make the award presentation at the biennial ORNAA conference.
Eligibility:
  • Must be an Operating Room Registered Nurse with CNA certification, CPN[C].
  • Must be active ORNAA member.
  • May be a nurse clinician, nurse manager, nurse educator, or nurse director.
  • A Muriel Shewchuk Excellence in Leadership nomination form must be completed. As per the nomination form, the nominee must be nominated by at least one registered nurse who writes a supporting letter that demonstrates how the nominee fulfills the criteria of the award. This letter must be signed by the nominator and at least two other registered nurses. Forward complete nominations to ORNAA Awards chairperson. Contact to obtain mailing address of ORNAA awards chairperson.
  • Nominations must be received by September 1st.
